Annual Dance Reid Hall Forfar - Band Marian Anderson

Previous News

On Thursday 6 March, 2008, a committee meeting was held  in the church hall when Gregor McGregor was co-opted onto the committee.    There were discussions regarding the entertainment, catering, etc for the  disabled club on 13 March.   There is to be a day of dance in the Reid  Hall on 27 March and duties have been allocated to branch members.    East Angus branch of the RSCDS have written to ask if they can join with Forfar  as they do not have a class of their own and this will be considered at the AGM.    The Spring Social will be at the Royal Hotel.   There will be a 2  course meal and music will be provided by Luke Brady - the cost will be £15.00.    All dancers are asked to bring a small raffle prize.   A date of 20  February 2009 has been arranged for the Annual Dance.   John White is  to be asked to play on the first Tuesday of each month in the next session.    The question of unauthorised teaching during class sessions was discussed and  all members are reminded that this is discourteous and unhelpful.   It  was agreed that a new microphone and new CDs would be ordered.

On   Thursday 17 January, 2008 a committee  meeting was held in the church hall.    Amongst items discussed were that a) Pat Robertson was pleased to take on the  branch archive, b) Sheila is to see about a new microphone, c) an advert will be  placed in the Forfar Despatch to try to encourage new members, d) a new date  will have to be found for the 2008 annual dance due to the hall being  unavailable on our "normal" date, e) the Royal hotel has been suggested as the  venue for our spring social, f) the committee has accepted an invitation to  provide entertainment and supper for the Red Cross Disability Club on 13 March.    For the full minutes click here.

A very enjoyable 2007 Xmas Dance was held in the Royal Hotel and everyone agreed  that the catering was much better than last year.  The music was excellent  and the dances were all old favourites.

The President's Chain (featured on this page) was  presented to the Forfar branch of the RSCDS in May, 1992 from the Ian Fraser  legacy.

On 21 June 2007 a committee meeting took place in the  Royal Hotel, Forfar where decisions were made in regard to future dates, junior  classes and members responsibilities.   These are detailed on other  pages of the website.   The next committee meeting will be on 25  October 2007

The AGM was held on 15 May 2007 with a good turnout of  members and a new committee was formed.   The chairman thanked the  retiring members Chrissie Allan, Helen Fleming and Marj Millar and welcomed the  new members.   Helen was presented with a bouquet in appreciation of  all her hard works as secretary.   Responsibilities of the committee  will be decided at the first meeting.   Mike Crouch gave a report on  the healthy financial situation of the branch with the bottom line being little  changed from last year.   Maggie Crouch gave a report on the last  society AGM and she and Linda Spence will be the delegates to the next society  AGM.   Gordon Snedden informed members that the website address was  now www.rscdsforfar.co.uk and asked members if he  could have some input for the website in the form of branch news, articles,  photographs, etc so that the website could be more interactive and up to date.

After discussion it was decided that a provisional booking  be made at the Royal Hotel for the Christmas Party.

The chairman asked for volunteers to help with the Angus  Schools Day of Dance 2008 and for a display team at a forthcoming event at House  of Dun.

Gordon Menmuir is to be asked if he will continue to audit  the branch's accounts.

Adult classes will restart on 18 September and the cost  remains at £2.00.   John White will be invited to play at the classes  once a month.   Decisions have still to be made in regard to the  format, dates and times of the junior class.

Sheena read out a poem in thanks to Helen Fleming for all her hard work (click here to read) and the meeting finished with a cup of tea and some favourite  dances.

The 2007 Annual General Meeting takes place at the East &  Old Hall on 15 May at 7.30 pm.

In celebration of the fact that  our branch celebrated 50 years as a branch of RSCDS in 2003 a new dance "A Birl Roond Forfar"was devised by the  committee and set to music by Deirdre Adamson.  It had its first "Airing" at our annual dance on 28 December  2003.     The dance depicts a walk through the streets of Forfar to climb up "Bummie" (Balmashanner  Hill) and then down past where the witches were caught and burned before  returning to the Cross, past the old jute weaving mills, and on round Forfar  Loch.  (A CD has been released by Deirdre Adamson featuring this and other dances).
